Sample Scholarship Application Essay for MBA School

A Scholarship Application towards Obtaining a Graduate Degree

An Example Scholarship Essay Written by a Student

Financial challenges come in a great variety of forms, and for a great number of reasons. In my case, despite working extremely hard for many years, and despite my natural frugality, I have been unable to save enough money to pay for my entire education. This is most likely because, for most of my adult life, I have supported my family which, at the present time, consists of two brothers in college and a baby on the way.

This degree of support for my siblings might seem strange to many native Americans, but it is common where I am from: the Ivory Coast in West Africa. We believe very strongly in the sanctity of the extended family, and take our obligations to each other very seriously. Several of us fled the war our homeland and came to the United States a few years ago, but just because we left the place we were born does not mean we left behind our traditions and beliefs. This is why it would never occur to me to tell my younger brothers to work their own way through college: it is my obligation to assist them, just as my parents helped me obtain my own college degree. In fact, I was the first person in my family to get a college degree (a bachelor's degree in global business and policy).

Currently, I work for an international law firm which specializes in commercial loans and recovery. We work for RESEARCH and the Export-Import Bank of the United States. At the same time, I am pursuing a dual master's degree: an MBA and a master's degree in supply chain management. This course of study will greatly complement my undergraduate work in global business and policy, and will enable me to extend the ideas I developed while studying for my BS. My general goal is to better understand how companies, individuals, non-profit organizations, and other entities can work together to seek solutions to the most pressing issues of our time: war, climate change, and poverty, to name a few.

My specific plan is to return to my home country after obtaining my MBA. I have partnered with eleven other individuals who are committed to opening a hospital for cancer patients and women experiencing high-risk pregnancies. Among the twelve in our partnership, seven individuals are doctors and the rest of us are professionals in finance, human resources, and information technology. Together, we comprise a formidable team - one whose expertise is sorely needed. My work experience will be particularly useful when seeking a loan for the hospital.

I not only work hard in my professional life, acquiring as much knowledge and practical skills as possible, but I also volunteer as a way to give back to my community. For example, I am a Big Sister to a few teenage girls, and through my work with them I am learning about their hopes and fears related to their future careers. Through this and other volunteer work, I maintain my ties with the so-called "real world" of individual people even as I work full-time in the corporate and legal worlds. In this way, I am able to further hone my commitment to applying my professional skills and educational attainments where they are most needed; for while the journey has been illuminating, I am eager to reach my destination.
